This week is National Suicide Prevention Week. I lost someone that I love to suicide. I am not alone.
A recent study shows that South Dakota is ranked 6th highest in the nation for suicide rates. The state reported more than 22 suicides per 100,000 people, as well as an increase of 59% since 1999, making it the 11th highest increase in any state. The rate of suicide in our Indigenous communities is even higher (2.5 times higher from 2009-2018).
Our state is in a silent crisis. We need knock down the wall of silence in our communities to help those struggling with suicidal thoughts, mental illness, and suicide loss. We need to remove the stigma. Seeking help is not a weakness. Seeking help is not shameful. Struggling with mental health does not make you any less. It makes you human.
For anyone who may be considering suicide, please stay. I know you are tired. I know it hurts but ride out the wave. The pain is not permanent. Tomorrow is another day. There is help. You are loved. You matter. Please stay.
